Edey played all 40 minutes v NC State. I'm pretty sure he won't be able to do that v UConn.DaveInSeattle wrote: ↑Sat Apr 06, 2024 10:11 pmYes they did.
Damn....UConn is a really good team. Clingan is a beast. It will be fun to watch him and Edey go at it.
What's cool about this UConn team is their 'best' player of the game is seemingly random. There's like a half dozen players that have taken that 'award'. I'm not sure that's happened before. Or if it has, then that team was really unique as well.

I just caught the last quarter in the sportsbook attached to the arena. It looked like the same thing as last year - a machine with 5 well-oiled parts vs. 1 superstar. Of course, I’ve been drinking without eating much, so grain of salt and all that.

Nope, this is accurate. Iowa got off to a quick start (7-0 with Clark's four teammates each shooting once on their first four possessions) and eventually got up by 11 or 12, but South Carolina just walked them down, then took control in the third.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
Yeah, that's pretty huge. I don't think Cal leaving is a huge surprise, even if it is big news. Going to a conference rival is a surprise though. The next domino will be interesting. I have to think that Hurley and Oats are at the top of UK's list. I don't think Danny's going anywhere, but I'm sure Oats would if it could be worked out. My understanding is that he has a huge buyout though.
The locals think the funniest outcome would be Kevin Keats capitalizing on his hot run and leaving NC State for UK.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
Scott Drew should probably be the first call. I don't see Hurley leaving, and Oats would probably be the next call if Drew isn't interested. He just leveraged a new contract and a new arena, though. so leaving Waco not a priority.

Maybe it was just inevitable that Clark would cool down, but it sure seemed like she was gassed in the second half. Full credit to an amazing SC team. 38-0 is EPIC.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
I suspect there’s something potentially disastrously scandalous coming down the pike. A top coach doesn’t just leave UK. If it’s money, I would think Cal has enough cachet to get them to match any offer.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
Cal does tend to leave one step ahead of the executioner (the NCAA), but in this case, I think it's just the overwhelming pressure from Kentucky fans. It's a tough job with unreasonable expectations. There aren't many comparable American jobs. The only one I can think of that combines incredibly high expectations with such a passionate, and quickly negative, fanbase is maybe Alabama football. I really don't think any pro jobs are quite as bad (although they're probably quicker to fire).

This is probably a mutually beneficial move. Cal may not have “it” anymore and Kentucky will have its choice of coaches to replace him.

I don't either but it would be such a facewash to all the Villanova fans who are like "he's done but if he does decide to return to coaching he would never do it anywhere else".
(Most ideally he'd come to the Knicks but that doesn't seem to be in play either unless Thibs decides to walk.)

It seems like Calipari's fit at Kentucky has always been at least a little bit off. Once he said that the goal was to prepare his players for their NBA futures, it seemed like there was no coming back and smoothing over any bumps.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
You probably already assumed this, but I just read Rex Chapman’s new memoir and it sounds like Kentucky is an incredible pressure cooker for the coaches and players.

I’m fine with it. They call too many fouls in CBB as it is. Should be reffed more like the NBA.

UConn was completely dominant. Was 15 points their closet game all tournament? Just amazing...they just choke teams out in the second half.

Hell, this game might've been a 20 point game had Hurley not shoved his player to get the offense moving.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
I agree with this, so long as it is consistent. Other than a couple of calls, i didn't notice the officiating much. Like was mentioned a couple of moving screens and the obvious charge, but they let some stuff go with defenders on Edey as well, so it comes out in the wash. It is a much more fun product when they don't call every little thing.

I enjoy watching Edey play - total throwback. Hope he lands somewhere in the NBA where he can settle in at 20 minutes a game off the bench and have a long long career.
Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
Why didn’t Painter go to the portal to sign a big to play 15 minutes a game? They ran Edey like a freakin mule this year. I get that he was dominant, and yes, they reached the title game, but if he wasn’t on the floor last night, UConn beats Purdue by 50 points.tennbengal wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2024 8:57 am I enjoy watching Edey play - total throwback. Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
If you say so. But to me that’s how you wind up with a team where 75% of your roster is from Indiana.
It wouldn’t have mattered anyway, but it is sort of odd that Edey gets all this credit for playing all those minutes when he was effectively taking plays off a lot of the time v Connecticut. He was actually leaning on Karaban late in the 1st, too.
I’m not saying they need to sign a 3 or 4 star athlete who wants to crack the starting lineup. I’m saying there was perhaps a 5th or 6th yr transfer portal candidate to be had out who would’ve liked a chance to play with Edey on his final shot at a championship.

Re: NCAA Basketball 23-24
Regarding Purdue's reliance on Edey, every article I read following the game that got into strategy at all noted that UConn's game plan was to let him score and take away Purdue's 3-point shooting, particularly when Edey kicked the ball out of the post when double-teamed (2.0 assists per game isn't bad at all for a big in college and 3-point shooting percentages are highest on passes that go inside-out than any other way). The Boilermakers ended the season 2nd in the country in 3-point percentage (40.4%) on 20.2 attempts per game (three guys shooting over 43% on over three attempts per game) while playing at a below average pace and finished the title game 1-of-7 from deep. Guys not named Edey shot 9-of-29 overall. Huskies did exactly what they planned.EnochRoot wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2024 11:43 amWhy didn’t Painter go to the portal to sign a big to play 15 minutes a game?
